Some facts#
- The molar mass is simply the mass of one mole of substance, i.e. the mass of the sample containing about atoms or molecules (→ see Avogadro number).
- The unit of molar mass in the SI system is kilogram per mole:
- However, in practice more often the molar mass is given in grams per mole (g/mol).
- The molar mass only makes sense for pure substances, i.e. it doesn't make sense for mixtures.
- The molar mass is specific for a given chemical substance. It results directly from the masses of atoms contained in the molecule.
- Knowledge of molar masses is useful in all kinds of stoichiometric calculations e.g. when converting molar concentration into percentages or determining the mass of substrates needed to perform the reaction.
