Some facts#

  • Devices connected to the network can provide various types of services by running applications e.g. HTTP or FTP server.
  • To use the services provided by the server, we need to connect to it through a network, e.g. LAN or the Internet.
  • To connect to another device on the network, we need to know its network address e.g. the Calculla site is available at IP address 52.16.174.165.
  • There may be multiple services on one network device (on one network address). In order to be able to indicate which service we want to use, a port mechanism has been created, which assigns given port numbers to selected applications, e.g. the HTTP server listens at port number 80 by default.
  • For TCP/IP (and UDP/IP), the port is stored as sixteen bits, which gives 2162^{16} i.e. 65536 different ports.
  • We can assume that ports below 1024 are reserved for so-called well known applications. For this reason, they are sometimes called well-known ports. Examples of such ports are 80 (HTTP server), 22 (SSH server) or 443 (HTTPS server).
  • On most modern systems, to run the application on a port below 1024 need administrator privileges.
  • By design, assigning applications to well-known ports (0-1024) should not change over time. Ports with numbers 1024 and above, change frequently and can be reserved by interested entities.
  • The institution that formally manages the reservation of ports in the internet is IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority). On the IANA website we can also find the current map of TCP and UDP ports.
