Some facts#

  • The punycode encoding was developed to provide support for international characters in domain names such as łabędź.pl.
  • Domain names encoded by punycode consist only of latin alphabet letters (ASCII), digits (0-9) or dash (-).
  • A document that standardizes punycode encoding is RFC 3492.
  • Domain names after encoding punycode receive the xn-- prefix e.g. domain kraków.pl has form xn--krakw-3ta.pl after encoding.
  • Punycode encoding is an essential part of the IDN (International Domain Names) standard, which allows the use of non-ASCII characters in domain names.
  • If you want to learn more about the domains themselves, you can visit our other calculator: Top-level domains.
