Some facts#
- Chemical bond energy is the amount of work that should be done to separate the molecule AB into single atoms to the distance of infinity.
- The energy of chemical bonding is given most often in kilojoules per mole :
- Knowing the energies of bonds present in products and substrates, we can estimate the enthalpy of the chemical reaction:
where:
- - change of enthalpy during the reaction, we assume that the reaction is the breakdown of bonds in substrates and the formation of new bonds in products,
- - number of moles of the i-th product,
- - enthalpy of the i-th product,
- - number of moles of the i-th substrate,
- - enthalpy of the i-th substrate.
- - change of enthalpy during the reaction, we assume that the reaction is the breakdown of bonds in substrates and the formation of new bonds in products,
- Higher energy corresponds to shorter bond. However, there is no simple relationship that allows to convert the bond length into energy or vice versa.
- Bond energy is a measure of its strength. The higher is the bond energy, the more work you have to do to break it.
- The bond energy increases with its multiplicity. A double bond between the same pair of atoms will have a higher energy than the analogous single bond.
