Some facts#
- The National Bank of Poland (NBP) can regulate the economy by adjusting values of interest rates. This way the monetary policy of central bank is fulfilled. The central bank can use interest rates to regulate amount of money in the market.
- Central bank can decrease interest rates in order to stimulate the economy by an incentive to invest (loans become cheaper). On the other hand it can also increase the rates in order to stop inflation by incentive to save (deposits become more attractive).
- Interest rates affect indirectly the exchange rate of polish zloty (PLN), interest rates of bank deposits and interest rates of loans.
- Interest rates are adjusted every month at the Monetary Policy Council (polish: RPP) meeting.
- The NBP reference rate defines the 7-day money market bills issued by the National Bank of Poland, which are then purchased by commercial banks in the open market.
- The reference rate directly affects the minimum lending rates. This is because the interest rate on the loan consists of the reference rate and the bank's margin.
- If the need arises, the central bank can stimulate the economy by lowering the reference rate. Then the interest rates on loans are lower, and therefore the entrepreneurs are more inclined to invest and consumers to buy goods financed by credit.
- Lowering the reference rate causes increasing the amount of money in the market as it makes people prefer to invest instead of saving.
- According to the current regulations (as at 2017.10.17) the nominal interest rate on the loan in Poland can not exceed twice the NBP reference rate increased by 3.5%, i.e. at the date of writing (2017.10.07) 10%.
