# Some facts#

• The moon is the only natural satellite of Earth.
• When we say "moon", we usually have in mind the moon of Earth. However, other planets also have their moons. For example there are 67 known moons of Jupiter. If you're interested in other moons in Solar System check out our another calculator: Moons of the planets.
• The first person who stood on the surface of the moon was Neil Armstrong. This happened as part of the mission Apollo 11, which was a success on July 21, 1969.

# What is the meaning of each calculator field ?#

• Average distance from Earth - because the moon moves on ellipses, its distance from the Earth is not constant. In this row the average distance is presented,
• maximum distance from Earth - distance between the moon and Earth at the apogee,
• minimum distance from Earth - distance between the moon and Earth at the perigee,
• mean radius - just the average radius of the Moon, in other word the average distance from its center to the surface,
• surface area - surface area of the moon given in km2,
• volume - volume of the moon given in km3,
• mass - mass of the moon given in kg,
• mean density - average density of the moon i.e. mass to volume ratio,
• syderic month - time needed to circumnavigate the Earth,
• synodic month - time needed to circumnavigate the Earth measured against the Sun,
• orbital speed - the speed at which the moon moves depends on the point of the orbit in which they are located, in this row the speed is averaged over the entire orbit,
• soil temperature - temperature measured at a certain depth below the surface of the moon.
