Some facts#

  • GS1 is a non-profit organization that standardizes supply chain management and demand management.
  • Thanks to the fact that GS1 brings together local organizations from different regions, it has become possible to create a unified way of product numbering.
  • We meet the GS1 prefixes every day buying products with barcode.
  • The GS1 prefixes specify the country where the product was registered. It is often a country of origin, but it's not a strict rule.
  • A special case are prefixes from from 977 to 979. They are not assigned to a specific region. They are used for:
    • books - prefixes 978 and 979 excluding 979-0, sometimes the fictitious region Bookland is used, numbers with these prefixes are compatible with ISBN (International Standard Book Number),
    • serial publications (so-called periodicals, e.g. monthly) - prefixes 977, they are compatible with the ISSN (International Standard Serial Number),
    • music sheets - prefixes 979-0, they are compatible with ISMN (International Standard Music Number).
