Some facts#

  • Braille allows to write any text using palpable by touch points.
  • Braille was created for blind people.
  • Reading Braille text relies on sensing convex dots, which are arranged in patterns assigned to characters (letters, numbers, punctuation characters, etc.).
  • In the basic version, Braille allows to write up to 64 characters using 6 dots arranged in 3 rows:

  • The first version of Braille alphabet was developed in 1824 year by Louis Braille, who lost his sight as a result of an accident.
  • Braille alphabet was inspired by pre-existing military systems used for communication in total darkness.
  • Since 2001, Braille characters have become part of the international UNICODE characters. The range of assigned codes is U+2800 to U+28FF, which allows to encode all 64 basic characters and 128 additional characters containing one extra row (a total of 256 characters). The document defining Braille characters in UNICODE is ISO 11548-1.
