Some facts#

  • There are two ways of naming large numbers in the world. Colloquially, these systems are called scales.
  • The long scale is currently used in most countries of the so-called continental Europe and most French, Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries except Brazil.
  • The short scale is currently used in most english-speaking countries e.g. in the US or UK. In addition, the short scale can be found in Brazil, countries of the former Soviet Union and Arabic-speaking countries.
  • The first two of "large" numbers, one thousand and one million, are the same regardless of the scale used. They are amount to 1000 (103) and 1000,000 (106), respectively.
  • In general case names are created from latin numerals with added suffixes: -lion or -liard (only long scale).
  • Long scale names are created according to the following rules:
    • n-lion = 106×n (e.g. septillion from the latin septa i.e. 7),
    • n-liard = 106×n+3 (e.g. octilliard from latin octa i.e. 8).
  • Short scale names are created according to the followng rules:
    • n-lion = 103×n+3,
    • n-liard does not exist in this system.
  • ⓘ Example: In long scale, the trillion means 103 = 1018, from latin tri i.e. 3.
  • ⓘ Example: In short scale, the septyllion means 107+3 = 1024, from latin septa, i.e. 7.
  • ⚠ WARNING! Although both systems (long and short scale) use the same names, the values assigned to numbers are different in general case. For example, a trillion in the long scale is 1012, but "only" 109 in short one. So, as you can see, they are two different numbers. Therefore, it's good practice to clarify what scale you use, where a risk of misunderstanding exists (e.g. if you work in an international environment).
