Some facts

  • Boiling point is the temperature at which the saturated vapor pressure equals the external pressure.
  • When the liquid reaches the boiling point, evaporation takes place with the entire volume. Then we say that liquid boils.
  • The boiling point is specific for the given substance. For example, the boiling point of water is 100 °C.
  • The boiling point depends on the pressure. Data given in this calculator refer to normal pressure, that is 1013,25 hPa.
  • The relationship between boiling point and pressure is as follows:
    Tb=(1T0Rln(PbP0)ΔHeva)1T_b = \left(\frac{1}{T_0}-\frac{\,R\,\ln(\frac{P_b}{P_0})}{\Delta H_{eva}}\right)^{-1}
    where:
    • TbT_b – boling point under pressure PbP_b,
    • P0P_0 – saturated vapor pressure at the reference temperature T0T_0,
    • PbP_b – the pressure of saturated steam at a given temperature (i.e. the pressure at which the boiling temperature is determined),
    • T0T_0 – known boiling point at pressure P0P_0,
    • RRgas constant,
    • ΔHeva\Delta H_{eva} – heat of evaporation of the substance.
